History

The PWP is part of an ongoing research project initiated by artist researcher Artur Matuck during his stay as a Visiting Faculty at the Department of English at VCU, during Spring 2009. The project is for the time being informally being developed in association with VCU faculty and graduate students.

Concept

Writing is an activity determined by culture, history, tradition and specially technology. Writing has evolved and spread through a series of technologies and creative inventions that have resulted in many forms of inscriptions throughout history. An artistic experimentation with modes of writing can and should lead to a reflection on the present modes of inscription, transmission and reception of written and/or spoken information.

In the process of investigating writing, we are also reflecting upon drawing, reading, speaking, listening, transmitting, perceiving, cognizing and so on. Writing processes occur in the midst of an ongoing process of communication and cultural change. Writing practices are always are today in accelerated change, being transformed, invented, constantly affected by new technologies and renewed practices within communication environments.

To perform writing is to create an open-ended artistic experimentation process, a new territory for research, invention, discovery and practice.

Process

The creative process was initiated on May 19th, 2009 with a meeting at the Cross Roads café in Richmond. Artur Matuck, Tom Adair, John Priestley discuss histories and possibilities for Performance Writing. Some suggestions were proposed as means to continue and expand the creative process on PW as it has been called in a resumed form.

Other meetings followed at the production lab at 340 Hibbs now with the presence of Bryant, along with Artur and Tom. It was decided that we should make public presentations, contact Galleries in the area and attempt to make at least one presentation including works by Tom Aidar and Artur Matuck..

First Performances and Video Recordings

A first recording session conducted at the Annex Building at VCU followed the May 19 th meeting at the Cross Roads café in Richmond . Artur Matuck performed his piece SCRIPTSOMA writing on a transparent acetate with a red pencil in his mouth. The action was recorded three times through a video camera and audio digital recorder operated by John Priestley. The two last recordings were edited by Bryant on May 28th and posted at You Tube.

Proposition

The intention now is to open up the concept to other artists, performers and writers through a series of conversations, production laboratories, workshops and performance events.

Objectives

The initiative intends to congregate interested artists, performers and writers to conduct informal interactional planning meetings, and gradually propose and conduct creative and production workshops. The results would be presented in a series of public or semi-public events.

The goal is to co-produce two performance events in June in Richmond , before Artur Matuck return to Sao Paulo , Brazil . Other online and presential meeting and presentations could also be planned specially for February 2010 when Matuck plans to be in Richmond again.

A first event [a series of performance writing pieces] will be presented by the collective members for a larger audience in a public event, if time permits and institutional support is secured.

Proposed Schedule

A rehearsal was set for Thrusday, June 4 th at the Annex Building.
